Rawalpindi: High Court, Rawalpindi Bench has accepted maintainability of appeals of two police officers challenging the decision of ATC for their convictions and fine in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

The High Court division bench consists of Justice Mohammad Tariq Abbasi and Justice Habibullah Aamir has issued notices to all stake holders including former SHO City Police Station Rawalpindi Kashif Riaz.

On Monday during the hearing former City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Saud Aziz and former SP Rawal Town Khurram Shahzad Haider were represented by their counsels, Ghaneem Abair, Azam Nazir Tarar and S.M. Farhad Termzi in the court.

Both police officers have challenged the verdict of Rawalpindi Special ATC No.1 and filed appeals in the High Court on Septemebr 7.

They prayed that the decision was taken in haste and their sentences should be declared null and void and they should be acquitted in the case. Both the applicants took the stance that they provided full security to former PM Benazir Bhutto. They said in their application that there was no concrete evidence against them and the statements of witnesses is wholly controversial. Under the law of evidence neither the case’s trial was conducted nor inquiry reports were given due considerations.

Under the decisions five arrested accused were acquitted whereas the petitioners were sentenced 17 years and fine of 1 million rupees each.

Former President Pervez Musharraf had been declared absconder and order given for the confiscation of his assets.d.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s);
