Lahore: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday urged the federal government to ensure that preferable medical facilities are provided to former premier Nawaz Sharif, who is serving seven-year imprisonment at the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore after being convicted in Al-Azizia Reference case.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday met ousted premier Nawaz Sharif at Kot Lahpat prison and said that the PML-N supremo should be given the best possible medical treatment for his medical condition. Addressing the media, the PPP chairman said that the country can only progress with democracy and added that the main focus of the meeting was to inquire on Nawaz’s health.

Bilawal said he had come to inquire about Nawaz’s health because he had heard that the former premier was unwell and over the past few weeks the PML-N and Nawaz’s daughter Maryam Nawaz had issued concerning statements regarding his health.

Bilawal Bhutto inquired about Sharif’s health along with other senior party leaders including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Mustafa Khokhar, Hassan Murtaza and Jameel Soomro. “Despite of being sick, Nawaz Sharif did not seem to make any compromise,” he went on to say.

“Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari had also served jail time in this jail,” he added. “Our visit was not for any alliance, very early to talk about an alliance,” the PPP leader clarified. “The PPP is ready to work with the government on important matters such as foreign policy, security and economy” he added.

To a question, Bilawal also criticised Finance Minister Asad Umar for criticising his speech in the National Assembly, saying that, “I don’t know why Asad Umar was disappointed when I spoke in English,” adding that the foreign minister also delivered his speech in English.

He said that the PPP believes that the basic principles of the CoD should be re-emphasised and the political challenges of today should also be discussed. He said solutions should be found to these challenges and while talking to other political parties in favour of democracy, a new document should simultaneously be prepared. He noted that his father had spent eleven and a half years in jail and eventually been acquitted by the courts. Of course he (Nawaz Sharif) is unwell but I got no impression that there is a deal being made or Nawaz Sharif is ready to compromise. Nawaz Sharif is focused on his principles and, God willing, the PML-N will remain fixed on their principles,” he said.
