Delhi Police arrest Kashmiri professor

SRINAGAR: Delhi Police arrested Kashmiri intellectual and former lecturer of Delhi University, Syed Abdul Rehman Gilani for questioning on Monday evening in connection with an event at Press Club of India in which slogans were shouted in favour of Kashmiri martyr, Mohammad Afzal Guru, on his martyrdom anniversary on 9th February.

DCP New Delhi, Jatin Narwal told mediamen that SAR Gilani was taken from his residence to Parliament police station for questioning.

SAR Gilani had spoken at the function held in Press Club of India to commemorate the martyrdom anniversaries of Mohammad Afzal Guru and Mohammad Maqbool Butt. He was charged with sedition after Hindu extremists demanded action against him, Kashmir Media Service (KMS) reported.

The participants in the function shouted slogans in favour of Afzal Guru who was illegally hanged to death in infamous India’s Tihar Jail Delhi and demanded justice for his family.

The SAR Gilani’s arrest was made on the day when a group of lawyers assaulted students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as well as some journalists at the Patiala House court. The violence broke out in the court as JNU Students Union President, Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested under sedition charges, was to be brought for a hearing. Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested in connection with an event held at the JNU on the martyrdom anniversary of Mohammad Afzal Guru.} else {
