Diamond Paints, Habib Metro scores victories in Royal Residencia Aibak Polo Cup

Lahore: Diamond Paints and Master Paints, Habib Metro Wednesday conjured up contrastive victories in the Royal Residencia Aibak Polo Cup 2016. Matches played here at the Lahore Polo Club (LPC) ground.

In the first match of the day, the new entry of 6-goaler foreigner Santiago Cernadas fortified the position of star-studded Diamond Paints and also enhanced their chances of winning all the three high-goal events.

Santiago made his presence felt in the very first match of the season by hammering eight out of nine goals scored by the winning side. The only remaining goal was converted by Mir Shoaib Ahmed to complete nine goal tally for Diamond Paints. Argentinean Juan Cruz Losada alone fought well and slammed all the five goals for Master Paints but his heroics couldn’t save his team’s blushes.

Losada of Master Paints, which had one and half goal handicap advantage, started the match in great style scoring two impressive goals to take 3½-0 lead which was reduced 3½-1 by Santiago in the dying moments of the first chukker.

Santiago stamped his authority in the second chukker hammering two back-to-back goals – 30-yard and 60-yard penalty hits – to make the score 3½-3 but Losada finished the chukker superbly scoring a field goal in the dying moments of the chukker making it 4½-3.

Santiago continued his brilliance in the third chukker and converted a 3-yard penalty hit successfully to make the score 4½-4. On the other hand, Losada was also in sublime form and contributed a significant goal through 60-yard penalty hit to once again enhance his team’s lead to 5½-4.

This time Mir Shoaib Ahmed came from behind and hit a fabulous field goal to make it 5½-5. Santiago further improved the scores of his team by smashing a field goal after long chase to take 6-5½ lead for his team. But Losada was in no mood to allow Diamond Paints to dictate their terms and hammered a field goal to take 6½-6 lead for his team before the end of the third chukker.

It was all which Losada and his team could earn as the fourth and final chukker totally belonged to Santiago who kept the scorecard clicking by striking a spectacular hat-trick and provided Diamond Paints a weighty 9-6½ lead to finish the chukker and match as victorious. For his awe-inspiring brilliance, Santiago was named man of the match. Howard Smith and Matias Vial Perez officiated the match as field umpires while Ahmed Ali Tiwana acted as referee.

The second match of the day saw Master Paints/Habib Metro outpacing Al-Khan by 6-5 after a thrilling contest. Pedro Guiterrez was star of the day as he smashed sterling five goals while Hissam Ali Hyder contributed one for the winning side while Max Charlton also played tremendous polo for the losing side by scoring fantastic five goals but his heroics couldn’t save his team from the loss.

The first chukker was equally poised as one goal each came from both sides. Pedro opened the account of Master Paints/Habib Metro with a field goal while Max converted a 60-yard penalty hit successfully to level the score 1-1. Max continued his good form and slammed his and the team’s second to make it 2-1. But Hissam and Pedro then hit one goal each to provide 3-2 lead to Master Paint/Habib Metro.

The first goal of third chukker was also scored by Max which levelled the score at 3-3. But before the end of the chukker, Pedro developed a goal through spot penalty near goal post to finish the chukker his team taking 4-3 lead.

Max continued his habit of scoring the first goal of every chukker, as this time too he scored for Al-Khan on 40-yard penalty hit to level the score 4-4. But Pedro once again converted a goal on 40-yard penalty hit to take 5-4 lead. Max was in no mood to let his team down so he utilized the opportunity of goal-scoring very well and scored a goal on 6-yard penalty hit to level the score at 5-5 once again.

At this crucial moment, both the teams were starving to score the all important goal to register victory and once again in-form Pedro produced a decisive goal to provide a well-deserving thrilling triumph to Master Paints/Habib Metro.
