ESUP organizes National Public Speaking Competition in Karachi

KARACHI: Maintaining a tradition of about two decades, the ‘National Public Speaking Competition (NPSC) 2014’, the second round of a three round contest, was organized by the English Speaking Union of Pakistan (ESUP) on Saturday 22nd March at a local hotel to select a finalist to represent Pakistan in the final round the International Public Speaking Competition 2014 to be held in London, UK, from 12th May to 16th May.

The Winner by unanimous consensus was Miss Bakhtawar Ahmed Abbasi of SZABIST, Karachi. Kader A. Jaffer, Sr. V. President ESUP, presented her the ESUP Running Trophy, donated in memory of Ahmed Jaffer the Founder of ESU Pakistan, by Ahmed Jaffer Foundation. Barrister Kamal Azfar presented her the Winner’s Trophy and Certificate. The first and second Runners Up were respectively Shiza Adnan Saleem of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi, and Afshan Akhter of Bahria Girls College, Islamabad.

They received their Trophies from Ms Nadira Panjwani and Mustansir. Saeed Ahmed, a leading businessman, ESUP NCEC Chairman Fund Raising Committee, presented them the Certificates. He also gave away the Participation Certificates to all participants.

The competitors, each a polished speaker, of the competition were six girls, two each – a Winner and a Runner Up – from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The contest was adjudicated by the Barrister Kamal Azfar, Ms Nadira Panjwani, Founder and Managing Trustee of the Panjwani Charitable Foundation and Trusts, well known for her commitment to spreading, supporting education as well as for philanthropy, and Mustansir Bandookwala who, besides being a busy businessman, is an active Rotarian and a devoted ESUP member.

The finalists were chosen from the first round of the IPSC, ‘The City Heats’ held in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. The closely contested City round in Karachi was adjudicated by Farooq Hassan, a retired Banker, Mrs. Naseem Saeed Ahmed and journalist Ms Sumaira Jajja.

The Beach Luxury Hotel provided complementary use of their venue for the two days event. The participants from Islamabad and from Lahore with their chaperones were also provided complimentary overnight stay and meals by Byram D. Avari, a committed supporter and Sr. V.
