Govt empowering the have-nots: Chairman BISP

RIO-DE-JANERIRO: Chairman BISP Enver Baig said on Sunday that cash transfers have to be complimented with graduation programs and to provide poor avenues for training so as to find job opportunities in the local and overseas market.

While addressing Inter-Ministerial Session at South-South Learning Forum being held in Rio de Janeiro, Chairman BISP, Enver Baig said that being custodian of social protection system in the country, we have to empower the have-nots to be self-reliant.

He said that he was delighted to be at the forum with his colleagues from Pakistan to learn from the world that how social protection systems can contribute to alleviate poverty and believed that the four days had been exceptional from learning perspective.

Chairman BISP apprised the people attending the conference about BISP, the short-term and long-term objectives of the programme and how it has evolved into one of the largest social safety net programmes in South Asia.

He said that the Government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif decided to continue further development and consolidation of this system by doubling its allocation in the current financial year budget and closely working with the provinces.

Chairman BISP shared the ideas learnt through sharing of experiences by participants from different parts of the world and admired the efforts of Peru, Philippines, India, Kenya, Romania, Malaysia and Egypt.

Enver Baig reiterated his commitment to support the poor boys and girls in Pakistan to get access to education and develop their prosperous future.
