Hafiz Naeemur Rehman exposes dejure formula of census, demands immediate election of local bodies for empowered local government

KARACHI : Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman held a presser on Monday demanding the government to hold local bodies elections immediately and to hold fresh census under the defacto formula instead of the dejure one.

Elaborating his view point at a crowded press conference at Idara Noor e Haq in connection with the declaration of the Rebuild Karachi Conference and the issue of fresh census, the JI leader said that under the defecto formula for census, head count is carried out as per the current address of people in a city, while under the dejure issue people are counted as per the permanent address of individuals mentioned in their CNICs.

Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman demanded of the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce date for the local bodies elections. He also strongly demanded direct elections for the mayor of the city. The JI leader Al’s demanded of the government to abolish the infamous quota system and provide job opportunities to the youth of Karachi on merit.

Talking about the transparency and accountability, he demanded of the government to carry out forensic audit of the K Electric accounts and the expenditure of billions of rupees on the proposed K4 water supply project. He also presented a balanced sharing formula to run the KE.

On the occasion, he also demanded of a comprehensive master plan for Karachi that would cater the needs of the city for the next 50 years. He added that immediate restoration of water supply and sewerage system, transportation system and other civic facilities for the city are the need of the hour.

He made it clear to the ruling regime that the JI’s Karachi Rights Movement will continue till the city is provided its due share in resources and till the last civic issue being faced by Karachiites is not resolved.

Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the last flawed census was the main obstacle in mitigating the problems of Karachi. He added that the well informed masses in Karachi had not accepted the flawed results and any further step in the same direction will be resisted by the masses.

He warned those at the helm of affairs that the JI will march to Islamabad, if the government again attempted to engineer the census. The city of 30 million individuals needs a proper mass transit system, he said while demanding immediate completion of the projects in Karachi.

Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also highlighted the issue of builder mafia in the city that deprives people of their lifelong earnings under the patronage of the influential people and political parties. Talking about the K4 water supply projected, he demanded the government to implement the project in letter and spirit instead of curtailing it to 260 million gallon from more than 600mm gallons.

JI leaders Dr. Osama Razi, Munim Zaffar, Saifuddin Advocate, Muslim Pervez, Raja Arif, Sohaib Ahmed and others flanked Engr Naeemur Rehman at the presser.
