High level meeting of KP, donors agencies held in Peshawar

Peshawar: A high level dialogue between KP government and donors and developmental agencies was held in Peshawar on Thursday.

Provincial minister for local government, elections and rural development Shahram Khan Tarakai and finance minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra co-chaired the meeting.

KP Chief Secretary Salim Khan, additional Chief Secretary Shahzad Khan Bangash, secretary Finance Shakeel Qadar, Secretary Information and Public Relations Mukhtiar Ahmad Khan, Secretary Local Government Zakir Shah, Secretary P&D Atif-Rehman, Secretary home Ikramullah Khan and other government officials also attended the meeting.

In the dialogue, representatives of different developmental agencies and donors including Asian Development Bank, world Bank, DFID, European Union UNDP and Jiaka were present. Shahram Khan Tarkai in his opening remarks described the provincial government priorities. Sustainable development strategy, ten years strategy for Tribal areas, comprehensive development partnership framework, budget 2019-20 and new local government system was the main areas on which dialogue were made and stressed to enhance mutual partnership and cooperation in these sectors.

Addressing on the occasion Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra said that we have not only to prepare successful planning but also to ensure welfare of the people. He said in the 100 days of our government, we not only fixed our priorities but also set the developmental goals.

He said for the uplift of economy we promoted tourism in the province and also establishment tourism authority. He went on to say that the government was actively involved in activating Rashakai Economic Zone and making the government affairs to be done easily.

He said if 50 percent targets were achieved, then new avenues of development would be opened in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Taimur Saleem Jhagra asked representatives of developmental agencies and donors to extend partnership instead of assistance. He stressed on the members of delegation to assist the provincial Government in the development of merged districts and bring them under national mainstreaming.

In his address on the occasion provincial minister for local Government Shahram Khan Tarakai while briefing the participants about the amended local Government system and its benefits said that the system has been made more deliverable by converting it to two tiers- under which in 25 Tehsils of merged districts, 702 village & neighborhood councils would be established. Similarly from these districts, after Local Government elections, 4914 representatives would be elected. He said we have already the cooperation of developmental agencies in local government reforms, model Tehsil complex, technical assistance and training of local Government employees and representatives and we are looking for its extension. He asked the representative of European Union (EU) to extend the CDLD programme to the merged districts.

On the occasion the donors and developmental agencies appreciated the government initiatives. They promised to continue cooperation in the ongoing projects, in various sectors as well as in the proposed new projects.
