Number of nilgais & birds died in Islamabad Marghazar Zoo

Islamabad: As many as seven nilgais along with other precious birds were died in the Islamabad Marghazar Zoo owing to the negligence and carelessness of Zoo administration.

The inner sources stated that currently numbers of costly birds and animals including lion, peacocks, deer, owl, hawks docks were sick and they need special attention. The inner sources stated that all the nilgais have apparently died due to negligence by zoo staff and due to the cold weather as there are no shelters or huts to keep the animals warm during the night.

Sources further disclosed that zoo staff only reported the deaths of small birds and they avoid deaths of nilgais. During the past four number of precious animals and birds reportedly died in the zoo. A senior office of the authority stated that zoo administration not checking the animals on daily basis and zoo was also lacking proper protection facilities.

Over two dozen animals have died in the zoo over the last few years including zebras, ostrich, lion cubs, a bear, urial, deer and nilgai and all the deaths were declared “natural” by the zoo staff. The zoo has faced neglect from the city managers and no development work has been conducted there for several years. Animals are kept in small enclosures which need to be upgraded.
