Rawalpindi: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Mohammad Anwaarul Haq has launched an evening court as pilot project aimed at protecting children from an atmosphere where criminal are present to attend proceeding in different cases.

The pilot court will be launched on November 9 this year. The court will be open from 2pm to 7pm. Only children custody related cases will be heard in the court. The court has been set up in Lahore on experimental basis.

The LHC chief justice will inaugurate the child custody court. Justice Haq will also meet children, their parents and lawyers and will seek their suggestions on the matter. The LHC chief justice will himself conduct first hearing of a case.

The sources at the LHC said that the decision has been taken to protect children from an atmosphere where criminal are present to attend proceeding in different cases and to avoid children absence from their schools. If the experiment remained successful similar courts will be set up across the province.

The project will be extended to 36 other district if required for expeditious decision of family cases under the West Pakistan Family Courts Act, 1964 and the Guardians & Wards Act, 1890 to secure the welfare of the children and protect the best interest of litigant public.

The former LHC chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah had set up arbitration centres. The project achieved success and proved to be credible to mediate. Many long-pending issues were resolved by those arbitration centres but his successor LHC Chief Justice Mohammad Yawar Ali dissolved all arbitration centres and model courts.

It is pertinent to mention here that arbitration centres and model courts solved as many as 900,000 cases in only six months which was a record. However, the current chief justice has directed to resume all arbitration centres and model courts.

He also ordered all civil and criminal courts to send maximum cases to arbitration centres so that they can be provided patch up opportunity. In the past, the experiment remained successful in this connection.
