Rawalpindi: The torrential rain that started on Monday night and continued till Tuesday in Rawalpindi and adjoining areas has unveiled the poor performance of the authorities concerned.

Recent spell of heavy rain has unmasked performance of district administration, municipal corporation, WASA, RWMC and traffic police water stranded at important roads of the city including Murree road. Due to improper cleanness of nullah and sewerage lines, filthy water started over flowing from these, just adding more woes to the worries of the residents.

Long queues of vehicles were witnessed in different areas of the city due to stagnant water at Murree road, Rawal road, Peshawar road, 6th road, Liaquat road, Katchehry Chowk and other parts of the city while filthy and polluted water led to scatter the filth and garbage. Traffic wardens remained absent to maintain smooth flow of the traffic.

The wagon drivers, motorists, motorcyclists parked their vehicles on safer places and took shelter in the buildings. The people on way to their offices trapped in the accumulated water on roads. The passers-by also suffered badly as it had become difficult for them to walk from one place to another when the rainwater accumulated on roads.

The sewerage system and small nullahs in the city areas got chocked exposing the poor performance of civic bodies of the district government. Rainy water gushed out flooding several houses and shops in the areas of Bohar Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, Sadiqabad, Javed Colony, Arya Mohalla, Chandni Chowk, Dhoke Hassu, Dhoke Elahi Bux, Nadim Colony, Commercial Market, Jamia Masjid Road, Murree Road, Adra Mohalla, Mall Road, Lane 4 of Westridge, Adiala Road, Dhoke Jumma and other localities.

The resident protesting over prevailing situation said that despite spending billion of rupees on sewerage and other projects, no practical advantage was being seen. They alleged that the amount allocated for project was being engulfed by the officers and contractors. They appealed National Accountability Bureau and anti-corruption department to investigate the money released in the name of developmental projects.
