SC acquits seven life sentence accused giving benefit of doubt

Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday voided the Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict and acquitted seven life imprisonment accused, giving them benefit of doubt.

A three-member bench headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Yahya Afridi conducted hearing of the case through video link.

It is pertinent to mention here that the trial court had awarded capital punishment to all seven accused identified as Amjad Ali, Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Khalid, Abdul Qayyum, Manzoor Ahmed, Tariq and Akeem over murder of a man in two different incidents of murder and robbery on Kasur.

Later, Lahore High Court (LHC) converted the death penalty into life imprisonment. Following the decision, the accused challenged LHC order in the top court and on Wednesday the apex court ordered their acquittal giving them benefit of doubt.

The accused persons’ lawyer informed that the apex court that the accused didn’t have any kind of differences with the victim.

The incident took place in 2004 in Kausar. During the course of proceeding, the chief justice remarked that both police and plaintiff had made up the story together.
