Senior PML-N leader Mohammad Pervaiz Malik passes away; funeral prayer to be offered today in Lahore

LAHORE/LONDON/ISLAMABAD : Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and MNA Mohammad Pervaiz Malik passed away in Lahore on Monday according to his son, MNA Ali Pervaiz Malik. He was 73.

Speaking to a private TV channel, his son said that Malik — who was also the former PML-N Lahore president and former commerce minister — had been ill for a long time and died after suffering from a heart attack.

He had excused himself from the presidency due to his illness but continued to look after party affairs on the leadership’s direction, his son Ali Pervaiz Malik said.

University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Javed Akram confirmed that Malik had died due to a heart attack, adding that he was brought to Akram Medical Complex.

According to Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences (UHS), Pervaiz Malik died of cardiac arrest. Family sources have said that the announcement regarding funeral prayers will be made later.

Muhammad Pervaiz Malik was born 1on 8 November 1947 in Lahore. Pervaiz Malik had served Minister for Commerce and Textile in Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s cabinet from August 2017 to May 2018. He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan for five times. He won the election in 1997, 2002, 2008, 2013 and 2018.

PML-N Lahore Secretary Khawaja Imran Nazir said that Malik’s funeral prayers will be offered today (Tuesday) at 9: 00 AM at a ground near Gaddafi Stadium.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid and former prime minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in a statement issued on twitter said that he, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, his whole family and all the workers of PML-N are grieved on the death of Muhammad Pervaiz Malik. Nawaz Sharif said that Pervaiz Malik was my longstanding and loyal aide and his affiliation with PML-N was exemplary. Nawaz Sharif prayed higher status in heaven for the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family especially his wife to bear this irreparable loss.

In a statement, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over Malik’s death and said the party had lost a “sincere leader and a good man”.

“He was a sincere brother, friend and ally and his demise is a great loss, ” Shehbaz said, noting his commitment and loyalty to the party and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

He added that Malik’s services for the country, the nation and democracy would be remembered forever. “He was a valuable asset of the party and it will not be possible to fill the gap he has left behind, ” Shehbaz said.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif in a statement issued on twitter said that she was shocked to hear about the death of clean and lovable person Pervaiz Malik, adding that he was an asset of the PML-N and longstanding and loyal aide of Nawaz Sharif. Maryam Nawaz said that her prayers and heartfelt sentiments are with Shaista Pervaiz Malik, Ali Pervaiz Malik and other member of the family. Maryam Nawaz prayed higher status in heaven for the departed soul.

Meanwhile Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Muhammad Hamza Shehbaz Sharif visited the residence of late Pervaiz Malik on Monday and condoled the death of Pervaiz Malik with his family members including his son Ali Pervaiz Malik.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb remembered Malik as a kind, humble and compassionate man who served the people. She said that his death has had the same effect as that of losing one’s father or elder.

PML-N Senator Chaudhry Azam Nazeer Tarar also termed Malik’s death a “great loss for all”. “Our beloved Pervaiz Malik MNA from Lahore left for eternal abode. May Allah Kareem rest his soul in eternal peace. A great loss for all of us” Azam Nazeer Tarar tweeted.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhry, Rana Sanaullah Khan, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah Khan, Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Mian Javed Latif, Khawaja Muhammad Saad Rafique, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Sheikh Fayyazuddin, Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Barrister Danyal Chaudhry, Tehmina Daultana, Azma Zahid Bokhari and other party leaders have also expressed grief and sorrow on the death of Pervaiz Malik and prayed higher status in heaven for the departed soul and courage for the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said he was “greatly saddened” by the news and praised the PML-N leader as a “sophisticated, sociable and loving person”. “You will be missed, ” Fawad Chaudhry said.

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser also expressed grief over Malik’s passing and offered prayers for his family. “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of a Member National Assembly Muhammad Pervaiz Malik. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May Allah bless him with high ranks in Jannah and give patience to his family, Ameen” Asad Qaiser tweeted.

Former finance minister and Secretary General Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sindh Dr. Miftah Ismail Ahmed in a statement issued on social media said that the passing of former commerce minister, PMLN MNA and senior leader, and a most kind and decent gentleman Pervaiz Malik is a blow to thousands of his well wishers. It’s loss for our party and our nation. May he rest is peace. And May his family have sabr e jameel.
