There is political interference in universities; govts make appointments on senior positions: Chairman HEC

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Tariq Banuri has said that there is political interference in universities and governments make appointments on all senior positions in universities and it is increasing the problems, saying that it should be the power of vice-chancellor.

Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr Tariq Banuri was expressing these views during his meeting with editors and bureau chiefs in Islamabad on Wednesday. He said that they are making the national academy of higher education functional.

The chairman HEC said that it was aim of HEC to give access to the people to higher education, which was not there at that time.

He said that people are concerned with regard to the standard of education, saying that even the standard of PhD is not satisfactory.

He said that standard of PhD is being improved, saying that on-line meetings of vice-chancellors and other responsible persons are held in HEC. He said that they want that there should be seat for every individual who want to get higher education.

The chairman said that there should be link between education and research so that it could be beneficial; saying that budget for higher education is being decreased for three years instead of making increase in the budget for higher education while administrative expenditure is increasing by 15 percent every year.

He said that new universities were constructed but budget was not allocated for them and due to the said reason, their burden is falling on the already existing universities.

He said that there is political interference in the universities, saying that there should be no political interference in the universities.

The chairman HEC said that governments make appointments on all senior positions in universities and it is increasing the problems, saying that it should be the power of vice-chancellor.

He said that they want that students should come from abroad to get education in universities in Pakistan which bring foreign exchange in the country.

To a question, he replied that it is not in Pakistan that universities are facing deficit even in United States (US) top universities are in deficit.

To another question, Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr Tariq Banuri said he was appointed on merit.
