Anti-polio team comes under attack in Karachi, Mansehra: 4 workers killed

Karachi: At least three anti-polio workers including two female workers were killed, two others wounded as campaign team came under attack at Qayyumabad area of Karachi on Tuesday, officials said.

Minutes after three anti-polio workers shot dead in Karachi, one campaigner was killed in brutal attack in Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Unknown miscreants ridding on bike fled the scene after opening fire on anti-polio team at Sher Garh area of Mansehra, as a result a male worker was killed on spot.

In Karachi, anti-polio team was busy in vaccination procedure in Qayyumabad area when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them, police officials said adding that two different teams were targeted in same area of Qayyumabad.

Two female workers and a male campaigner killed on spot while a lady health worker was among two hurt in Tuesday attack, a pedestrian was also wounded in Tuesday attack, police said.

Officials said two female workers were missing and believed to be kidnapped by the miscreants who have fled the scene.

Deceased workers were identified as Farhan, Akbari and Anita.

Wounded staff shifted to Jinnah hospital for treatment.

Health officials said tragedy occurred as security and police escort was not provided to teams which have been attacked on Tuesday.

EDO Health Dr. Zafar Ijaz has ordered to halt anti-polio campaign in Eastern district of Karachi.

Meanwhile, Anti-polio workers association has announced to suspend campaign in entire Sindh province, the association said they cannot put their lives in danger against Rs. 250.

They demanded complete security for the workers.

Most attacks on anti-polio teams occurred in lawless tribal areas of Pakistan and terrorism hit province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but Karachi, the largest metropolis and financial capital of the country also witnessing such attacks frequently.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 3.5 million Pakistani children missed out on polio vaccination when over a dozen immunisation workers were shot dead in various parts of the country.

WHO in recent days declared Peshawar as epicentre of polio virus in the world.
