ISLAMABAD: The appointment of the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) is in doldrums despite clear cut orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Sources said it is clearly written in the HEC Act that the permanent Chairman of this only higher education regulatory authority should be appointed within three months after the expiry of contract of previous HEC chairman.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan is bounded to appoint a professional, highly qualified, internationally recognized educationist and well experienced person for the post of HEC Head.

However, it is lamented that the HEC head has not been appointed even passing 4 months.

The federal government could not appoint the chairman HEC even after passing 120 days.

In the meantime, educational experts, Vice Chancellors and Civil Society members have demanded of the federal government and the Prime Minister to immediately pay heed over the issue of permanent appointment of the HEC Chairman on merit and transparently.

Sources informed the President Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), founder and former Chairman HEC Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman has decided to move Supreme Court over delay permanent appointment of HEC head. He also demanded of the federal government to take immediate notice of the issue.

It is significant to recall that on November 27, the central government apprised the Supreme Court that the matter of HEC chairman’s appointment under consideration. However, nothing has been done so far in this regard.
