Cold wave intensifies after snowfall, rain

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Parts of the country received heavy to light rain and snowfall, accompanied by chilly winds which brought temperature considerably down. The Metrological department has forecast more downpour Balochistan, Punjab and northern areas.

Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) said Quetta valley and surrounding areas received first snowfall of the season last night. It continued till Wednesday morning, bringing the mercury down to minus 1 degrees Celsius, sending cold waves to Karachi and other parts of the country.

Mercury further plunged in Karachi where drizzling is expected during the next 24 hours as fog and cold intensified. Minimum temperature was recorded 8 degree C in Karachi.

The PMD said Kalat, Chaman, Ziarat, Mastung and other parts of Balochistan also experienced one feet of snow which caused a suspension of traffic on highways.

Four to six inches of snowfall was recorded in Mansehra, Butgram, Swat, Kaghan and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, besides Neelum valley of the Kashmir region. Light rain intensified cold in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The PMD said rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at scattered places of Quetta‚ Zhob‚ Kalat‚ Hazara‚ Rawalpindi‚ Malakand divisions‚ Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during the next 12 hours.
