Islamabad: Time has come to bear the electricity load shedding as the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Tuesday started closing down canals for annual cleaning and maintenance.

“The Indus River System Authority has reduced indents for annual canal closure due to which load shedding of about two hours will start on Tuesday,” a statement issued by the ministry of water and power said.

“Inconvenience to be caused to the people due to load shedding is regretted,” it added.

Minister of Water and Power, Khawaja Asif had already apologized the nation in advance for this inconvenience.

The minister said there was pressure on gas power plants owing to annual closure of canals and to ensure gas supply to industries as a result the country would face load shedding for few weeks.

According to a reports, the canals closure that would last till Jan 30 would reduce the hydropower generation by more than 4,000MW, resulting in increased outages.

Currently, the total generation from hydel and thermal power plants and IPPs is standing between 8,000MW to 9,000MW against the overall demand of around 11,500MW.
