FO confirms one Pakistani among nine killed in Kabul hotel assault

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan foreign office on Friday confirmed a Pakistan national was killed and another wounded in an attack on Kabul’s luxury hotel on Thursday.

Taliban gunmen killed nine people in an attack on a Serena hotel used by foreigners, especially staff of United in Afghan national capital, before being shot dead in a shootout with Afghan security forces.

Spokesperson of foreign office said in short statement that a Pakistani was among nine people killed in terrorists ambush on Kabul’s Serena hotel while another Pakistani wounded in Thursday attack.

Tasnim Aslam said Pakistani diplomatic mission in Afghanistan is monitoring the situation added that wounded Pakistani national is being provided best medical assistance in local hospital in Kabul.

Thursday assault on the heavily fortified Serena Hotel was the latest in a string of bold attacks by the insurgents seeking to spoil a presidential election on April 5, which would mark the first time in Afghanistan’s history that one elected government hands power to another.

Four Taliban fighters snuck into the hotel early on the evening of March 20 and hid for three hours before storming into the restaurant and opening fire on people inside, according to Afghan interior ministry spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi.

They then battled Afghan Special Forces for more than an hour inside the hotel before being overwhelmed, as terrified guests hid in rooms or fled to bunkers inside.
