Justice Tasadduq Jillani sworn in as new CJP

ISLAMABAD: Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani has taken oath of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and has become 21st chief justice of the country.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani in a simple but impressive ceremony here Thursday.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister (PM) Muhammad Nawaz Sharif cabinet members, speaker National Assembly, chief minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, chief justices of Federal Shariat court and high courts, former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and ambassadors of several countries.

It may be mentioned that new CJP Tasadduq Hussain Jillani will stay at his office for a stint of six and a half month. “ Insaf for all” is a masterpiece judicial anthem which has been authored by CJP Tasadduq Hussain Jillani. This anthem which is product of his literary creativity and ingenuity was given by Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani to Supreme Court (SC) in 2006 and this enjoys the status of judicial anthem.

New CJP hails from Multan, the city of saints. He got his secondary education at Lahore. He did masters in Political Science from FC College Lahore and later he passed advanced course in law from university of London. He started his practice as lawyer from Multan in 1974. He was elected as general secretary of district bar Multan. He remained advocate general of Punjab. He was appointed as judge of Lahore High Court on August, 7,1994 and was elevated as judge of SC on July, 31, 2004. He refused to take oath under PCO promulgated by former president Pervez Musharraf on November, 3, 2007. Later he was reinstated after one and a half year under Farooq Naik formula.

Justice Jillani gave historical verdicts in several important cases. Lawyers say that even competent persons have to take recourse to dictionary to comprehend the decisions authored by him. The tone and tenor of CJP Tasadduq Hussain Jillani is soft and serene among all the judges of SC. “Insaf for all “ a judicial anthem was written in English and later translated into Urdu by him into beautifully knit words.

It was Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani who had taken suo moto notice of incident of 100 casualties caused by spurious medicines in Punjab Institute of Cardiology.

Justice Jillani had rejected a petition filed against drone strikes that the matter did not fall under the jurisdiction of SC. The SC bench which had declared Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif eligible for contesting polls after restoration of judiciary was headed by Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani.

Justice Jillani is distant relative of former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani therefore; he had not heard the contempt of court case against Gillani.

Soft spoken Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani has declared former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as his role model besides saying that no compromise will be made on law and constitution during his tenure as CJP.

Justice Nasir ul Mulk will assume the responsibilities of CJP following the retirement of CJP Tasadduq Hussain Jillani and he will perform his function for 13 months as CJP. Justice Nasir ul Mulk will be followed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja who will remain CJP for the shortest term of 23 days. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remained CJP for the longest period in the history of judiciary.
