KARACHI: The residents of Qayyumabad staged a demonstration against the search operation and arrests kicked off by police on Wednesday morning and blocked the Expressway for traffic.

Details have it that police initiated a search operation today morning after the killing of three anti-polio workers including two women in Qayyumabad area on Tuesday morning.

During the raids, several suspected persons were arrested that was followed by severe resistance from the residents of the area. They staged a protest on Expressway and blocked the Korangi road for traffic, creating massive traffic congestion. The commuters travelling on affected route faced extreme difficulties in reaching to their destinations.

The polio vaccination campaign suffered a major setback countrywide on Tuesday, as three workers of an anti-polio team, including two women, were gunned down in Karachi and another was killed in the Oghi Tehsil of Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Karachi, gunmen riding six motorcycles targeted a team of health workers, killing three people and wounding two others in a hit-and-run attack, police said.

At least 10 to 12 armed men — some of them wearing helmets — opened fire at the health workers in the Qayyumabad neighbourhood when they were out to administer polio drops to children.

Police said despite security threat, the polio vaccinators went out to perform their duty without the mandatory police escort. The assailants used 9mm pistols. Empty bullet shells were sent to Sindh Police forensic division.

Following the attack, health workers halted polio vaccination drive across Pakistan where efforts to eradicate this crippling disease are being obstructed by the local Taliban militants and hard-line clerics, who declare it a Western conspiracy to make children infertile and against the tenets of Islam.
