LHC directs EC to file progress report on matter of election date for polls in Punjab
LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed Election Commission (EC) to file report on the matter of election schedule for Punjab Assembly election.
A single bench of LHC led by Justice Jawad Hassan took up for hearing on Wednesday a petition seeking initiation of contempt of court proceedings against election commission and governor Punjab for not giving date for Punjab Assembly election despite court’s orders.
Justice Jawad Hassan remarked during the hearing of the case “ Azhar Sahb how so early your application is fixed for hearing. Why are you in so hurry. Have you no trust on the courts.
The courts inquired where are the counsels of election commission and governor. Has election commission filed any appeal.
Justice Jawad Hassan remarked court has done its job. Now the court is waiting they are doing what.
The counsel for petitioner told the court election commission has issued a press release that governor has refused to give date.
Justice Jawad Hassan remarked the court does not accept press releases. Election commission has 20 days with it to file appeal. You should wait.
The counsel for the petitioner said that governor said he does not want to take extra constitutional step . Assembly has not been dissolved therefore, he cannot give date. Governor said the court’s orders were interpretable.
The counsel for federal government told the court election commission made consultation with governor as per court’s order.
