Minister decorates ECOSF chief Dr Manzoor with gold medal

KARACHI: President, Economic Cooperation Organisations Science Foundation (ECOSF), Dr Manzoor Hussain Soomro was decorated with a gold medal by the University of Sindh (SU) in recognition of his contributions made to the fields of science, technology and education.

The medal was awarded to Professor Dr Manzoor Hussain by Sindh Senior Minister for Education, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in the University’s Convocation, a press release said on Thursday.

According to a press release, Prof Manzoor Hussain has a brilliant academic and over 30 years of professional career.

He is a pioneer scientist who had diagnosed the epidemic of banana birch top virus (BBTV) that had destroyed banana crop in the country in early 1990s and his efforts of scientific research and trainings of farmers had revived the crop.

In recognition of his outstanding work, he was appointed by the International Banana Network (INIBAP) as member of its Advisory Committee for Asia and Pacific region that he served for five years.

Dr Manzoor also served in FAO of United Nations, Chief Scientific Officer, DG, Pakistan Museum of Natural History, DG PASTIC, Member Science and Chairman of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).

In PSF, he developed cooperation with UNESCO, China, France, Iran, Italy, Turkey and the ECO.

He also launched UNESCO’s “Man and Biosphere” (MAB) programme in

Pakistan. Due to his efforts, Pakistan has reappeared on the World map of Biosphere Reserves (BRs) with declaration of the Ziarat Juniper Forests of Balochistan as BR in 2013.

Currently, Dr Manzoor Hussain is leading the Economic Cooperation Organisation Science Foundation (ECOSF) for promotion of science cooperation among the 10 member states of ECO.
