NAB Chairman directs for pursing all cases vigorously, expeditiously

LAHORE: Chairman NAB Qamar Zaman Ch. has directed NAB officers to pursue all cases vigorously and expeditiously, so as to ensure swift justice to all.

During the briefing at Regional HQ NAB of NAB Punjab here on Friday, Ch. Qamar Zaman directed that “Character Building Societies” (CBS) in all institutions will play a critical role in creating awareness against corruption.

He desired that these be established across the Province. He pointed out that Awareness and Prevention should not be confused with Investigation and Prosecution. He also wants that NAB should take the lead in fighting corruption.

Delaying the cases also reduces chances of recovering losses to the national exchequer. He also said that in terms of conviction rates, NAB has done fairly well compared to other anti-corruption agencies, but there is always room for improvement, he said.

Director General NAB Punjab, Hasnain Ahmed and senior officers of the Bureau briefed the Chairman about the functioning of the region and status of cases being dealt with by the region. NAB Punjab, has so far, established 13,936 CBS in different districts of the Province particularly in the educational institutions.

He was further informed that under the Prevention regime NAB Punjab has reviewed pre-tendering process in 86 contracts amounting to Rs. 2.71 Billion. Concerned departments have, on the basis of corrective measures suggested by NAB, issued 40 consequential corrigenda paving the way for saving of Rs. 1.899 billion of the National exchequer.

The bureau also reviewed 128 post-tender contracts amounting to Rs. 51.48 Billion out of which scrutiny of 98 has been completed whereas 30 projects are under review.

Chairman NAB was informed that NAB Punjab is having 408 complaints under scrutiny, 278 complaint verifications, 167 inquiries, 87 investigations which make the total ongoing cases in the region 992. NAB Punjab has filed 668 references out of which the accused in 229 cases have been convicted; while 101 have been acquitted.

He was also apprised that NAB Punjab has recovered 26.436 billion Rupees of the national exchequer in different categories since 2006 and is the leading region of NAB as for as the recovery of dues from electricity defaulters is concerned.

Chairman was briefed on the important cases being pursued by the bureau including the cases of NICL, Railways, Bank of Punjab, Qasar-e-Zauq, State Life Employees Housing Society involving Cheating at Public at Large and Double Shah Scam.

The Chairman directed that the cases of Cheating public at large be given priority so that the looted money may be recovered from the swindlers and return to the affected peoples at the earliest.
