ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased the power tariff by Rs 1.1 per unit that would be effective from Feb 2014.

NEPRA officials informed that regulatory authority increased the power tariff following the request of Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). Official said that CPPA filed a petition before NEPRA and stated that its reference fuel cost for power generation in Dec 2013 was Rs 7.86 per unit while actual cost remained Rs 8.87 per unit. CPPA said that in Dec 2013, 6.7 billion units were sold and its cost was 59.43 billion rupees.

Central power purchasing agency disclosed during the hearing that transmission losses increased to Rs 208 million which was largely resented by NEPRA authorities.

During the hearing, vice chairman NEPRA Khawaj Muhammad Naeem said that due to desalination in Dec hydel generation reduced and reliance on oil based plants increased therefore generation cost of power increased.

NEPRA authorities said that this increase would not be enforced on lifeline consumers consuming 50 units, PESCO and KESC consumers.
