Over 1.2m people participated in first segment of PYF

Lahore: Provincial Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan has said that more than 1.2 million general public has participated in the first segment of Punjab Youth Festival with nine events organized by 55 thousand Sports & Youth Development Councils at neighbourhood/village level.

In a press conference here today, the Minister hoped that keeping in view the enthusiasm of general public, the total number of participants of Punjab Youth Festival 2014 will reach to five million as compared to 3.3 million who participated in the last youth festival making it the largest ever sports event in the world.

He informed the media men that neighbourhood/village level events included individual events of Naat Khawani and Qirat, sports sector events of arm wrestling, athletics, badminton, billiard, cricket (tape ball), tug of war and volleyball. These events ended on the 1st January 2014. Matches / competitions were started simultaneously at all 55200 Sports & Youth Development Councils established at neighbourhood/village level. The next segment of the Punjab Youth Festival 2014 will commence from January 5 and will be concluded on January 14 this year after which tehsil, district, divisional and provincial level
competitions will be held.

Provincial Minister for Sports disclosed that the Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to establish a sports endowment fund with a seed money of Rs.2 billion.
This endowment fund will be utilized to train and polish the emerging young talent in the Punjab Youth Festival in future. State of the art sports university will be established in the metropolis of Lahore while sports academies and gymnasia at tehsil level will also be established through utilization of this fund besides providing financial assistance to the veteran sportsmen.

He hoped that Punjab Youth Festival will provide a door of opportunity to the youth to envision their bright future. The government has provided an equal play field to citizens of all ages to test and prove their skill with the spirit of a lion heart.

People of Pakistan will prove through this festival that they are dare to achieve the desired destination in a positive manner keeping up the sportsman spirit intact. This will enhance our soft image in the world, the Minister concluded.
