Over 12 million voters will be eligible to exercise their right to franchise in next general elections: Secretary ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will complete printing of the final electoral rolls by 12th August, 2022.

 

This was announced by Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan, Umar Hameed Khan, while addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Monday.

 

He said the preliminary electoral rolls have been placed at over 20,000 display centers across the country for general public to check their votes.

 

The Secretary Election Commission urged the people to visit these display centres for correction or inclusion of missing names if any.

 

He said people can also know about their votes by sending a free SMS containing CNIC number without Hyphen and spaces to 8300.

 

The Secretary ECP said that over 12 million voters will be eligible to exercise their right to franchise in the next general elections. The election commission while demanding of the government to issue the results of the census till 31st December said that if the results will be issued after 31st December then the delimitations will be done according to 2017 census. Secretary ECP said that old electoral lists will be used in the bye-elections in Punjab, adding that it is regrettable to spread doubts about the voter lists.

 

Umar Hameed Khan clarified that Election Commission is independent and sovereign institution, adding that holding fair and transparent elections is the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

 

He said that local government elections in Islamabad are being held on the old delimitations on the orders of the Islamabad High Court. He said that the ECP will be ready to hold the general elections till the end of October this year.

 

He said that the pilot project of Electoral Voting Machines (EVMs) has not been grounded, adding that the work on EVM and internet voting is continued. He said that irrespective of the government, the Election Commission will continue its work with full vigor according to law.
