Pakistan Railways bore losses of Rs 30.5b in 2012-13, Senate told

Islamabad: The Senate was informed Friday that the losses suffered by Pakistan Railways during the financial year 2012-13 an amount of 30.50 billion rupees.

Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique told the House during Question Hour that the outstanding bills of various government departments on account of transportation charges to Pakistan Railways stand at 294 million rupees.

He said Pakistan Railways has recovered an amount of 1.15 billion rupees from July 1‚ 2011 to November 30‚ 2013 from various departments.

He assured the House that the loss of Pakistan Railways will be significantly reduced in next four and a half years.

To a question‚ the Minister said presently no luggage train is running over the system and will be restored only after ensuring that it fulfils the customers’ demand to their satisfaction. He said 180 locomotives on average are operational in the country.

The Minister said 285 locomotives are out of order at present‚ out of which 200 are repairable. He said 97 engines are under going through repairs and maintenance and will become functional in next two years. He said procurement of 225 new locomotives is under process.

Members belonging to opposition benches staged a token walkout from the House over not preparation of Ministers about the questions asked in the Senate.
