Pakistanis welcome new year with fireworks, aerial fire & dancing

KARACHI: With fireworks and dancing to the beat of drum, new year was celebrated in Pakistan. As the clock struck 12:00 AM, revelers sprayed fireworks and resorted to aerial fire in different cities of the country. They also started dancing to the beat of drum. Special new year programs were held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta and other cities.

In Karachi new year was welcomed with a massive fireworks at Port Grand. Meanwhile, all routes leading to sea view have been blocked by placing containers, while the residents of Defence and Clifton areas have been asked not to come out of their homes on the eve of new year.

In Lahore, heavy contingent of police were deployed at Mall Road due to security reasons. At least 10 people including a woman sustained injuries as aerial firing broke out in the city on New Year’s eve.

Meanwhile despite of strict security measures taken by the government in Karachi, heavy aerial firing rocked various parts of the metropolis.

The aerial firing broke out in Kharadar, Meethadar, Akhtar colony, Papochnagar, Gul Bahar, Qayyumabad and Netty Jetty.

Police have arrested eight accused on the charges of aerial firing. Police said four were arrested from Mehmoodabad and Clifton while four others from North Nazimabad.

Earlier, police closed several roads leading to Clifton after which hundreds of vehicles struck in massive traffic jam on main thoroughfares of the city.

Sindh Government had also put ban on pillion riding and carrying licensed weapons.
