ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power has declared PESCO (Peshawar Electricity Supply Company) reports regarding line losses and recoveries as unsatisfactory and unreliable.

The meeting of the committee chaired by Senator Zahid Khan on Monday asked PESCO to submit its report within 25 days; failing otherwise a committee would be asked to investigate all irregularities.

Committee members also demanded clarifications about reduction in electricity supply to 5200MWs , despite clearance of Rs 480 billion worth of circular debt; which when active was still able to generate 5500MWs of electricity through IPPs.

MPCC officials replied that according to contracts with IPP, government was responsible for such factors as provision of oil, clearance of outstandings, electricity quota were governmental responsibilities.

The officials also informed that since IPPs were bound to pay full price, no matter even if they produce lesser electricity, hence the government should ensure to obtain full electricity from these IPPs.

The committee members also expressed their concerns over another accumulation in circular debt to a tuner of Rs 194 billion, while Balochistan owed yet Rs 81 billion in lieu of subsidies.
