ISLAMABAD: IG Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Nasir Durrani has said if religious leaders and Ulema take the responsibility then polio problem can be overcome. He said while talking to BBC here Saturday. He held that services of Ulema were obtained in connection with family planning program in Bangladesh and this project met success due to cooperation of religious leaders. This can be done here, he added.

“I have to deploy 50 percent police force for providing protection to polio teams and on the other hand police is undermanned and is lacking resources”, he said.

Ulema and people from all school of thoughts are being integrated into the campaign besides providing security to the teams so that they could work in better way”, he remarked.

“Our force provides protection to anti polio teams but the attackers ambush on them. This is not face to face encounter but the militants launch attack at such time when the polio teams workers return from duty places or they plant the bomb anywhere when the vehicle takes the workers to the duty place”, he held.

He said that government has been asked to hammer out better planning. Police is already engaged on different fronts. As this process will continue on permanent basis, therefore, there should be a lasting solution to this problem.

He proposed that services of retired police personnel can be hired for this purpose as deploying police on this duty will be injustice with other people to whom it is providing protection already.

When asked what the role is being played by the police at present he said police is discharging its duties and planning is being fine tuned.

“We should integrate Ulema and people from other segments of society into anti polio campaign and work together with them on this count, he underlined. A seminary has given a decree in connection with polio campaign. It is a better thing and more efforts are needed in this respect, he stressed.

Majority of polio cases have been reported in KPK and tribal areas this year while on the other hand polio teams and police teams deployed in providing them protection have been attacked upon mostly in KPK.

When asked that personnel of untrained special police who are deployed with the polio teams are inexperienced he said it is correct but police have its own compulsions. We are utilizing the resources whatever is available with us, he added.
