Senate body asks PNC to revisit Private Nursing colleges for inspection

Islamabad: Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination on Thursday received a briefing on the affairs of the Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) and directed the body to improve its working mechanism and ensure transparency.

The committee meeting, which was chaired by Senator Dr. Muhammad Hamayun Mohmand also directed the council to monitor the performance and standard of registered nursing colleges and make sure that all such colleges are working as per the rules.

Senator Humayun Mohmand said that the PNC was working without rules and regulations since 1973 to till so far. While officials of the health ministry informed that the joint session of the parliament has approved a new act, therefore new rules and regulations will be drafted in accordance with this act.

He said that it is unfortunate that the new bill approved by the joint session without the discussing and deliberating of the NA and Senate committees.

Senator Humayun directed the concerned authorities to revisit the private nursing colleges for inspection and submit the report of inspection in the next one month.

The committee discussed the matter of de-notifying Dr Shazia Sobia Soomro from the position of the President of the PNC. Senator Humayun said that we received a de-notifying memo from the Chairman Senate while keeping in view the memo the Senate committee are not able to take any comment from Dr Shazia Soomro.

Meanwhile, Dr Shazia claimed that the incumbent de-notifying memo is illegal and accused the executive council committee that it has no constitutional right to call the meeting citing during the inquiry of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) over the malpractices in the PNC.

She said that after assuming the charge of the President of the PNC, we worked for the betterment and improvement of the standard and quality of the nurses.

She informed the committee that PNC restored their online registration system and this will help for issuing the nurses cards without any visit of the PNC office.

PPP Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi raised a question that how is it possible that any executive committee issued de-notifying notification of Parliamentarian.

Vice President of PNC, Dr Farid ullah Shah ensured the committee to provide the minutes of the executive meeting in the next Senate meeting.

The committee decided to constitute a sub-committee to examine the matters of PNC and submit a report to the committee. Senator Prof Dr. Mehar Taj Roghani will be the head of the committee with members including Senator Rubina Khalid and Senator Sardar Muhammad Shafiq Tareen.

The special Secretary of the Ministry of National Health Services, Mirza Nasir-ud-din Mashhood Ahmasd informed the committee that the FIA was also investigating the matters of the PNC and all allegations are being examined thoroughly.

He added that the report will be prepared soon on all such matters and that all records of the council are with the FIA.
