KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly session has approved Sindh Local Government Act (amended) 2013 here on Friday. The session considered the approval of two recently promulgated ordinances to amend the act amid opposition protest.

The two ordinances–Sindh Local Government (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2013, and Sindh Local Government (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2013 – were brought in the house for approval well before the expiry of their 90-day constitutional life.

The provincial government has earned the ire of the main opposition parties, which have accused the ruling party of “unlawful and unconstitutional” moves to obtain favourable results in the upcoming local bodies’ polls.

Meanwhile, addressing the session‚ the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that targeted operation has started yielding positive results and at least 30 percent reduction in the crime rate has been witnessed after the launch of operation.

He said we do not have enmity with anyone and only criminals are being netted in the operation. He said the Federal Government’s support for Karachi operation needs to be appreciated. He hoped all political parties in the House and outside will supplement government’s efforts for eradication of incidents of targeted killings and other criminal activities.

He told that 13 thousand 500 criminals have been arrested since the start of operation in September.

It may be pointed out that the session has been called on the requisition of three opposition parties. Earlier‚ talking to media outside the Assembly Building before the session‚ Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said that he will provide ample opportunities to the opposition members to freely express their reservations on the ordinance on local Bodies.
