Karachi: Sindh Government led by Pakistan People’s Party on Monday decided to challenge Sindh High Court (SHC) verdict in the Supreme Court (SC) regarding Sindh Local Government Act (SLGA) 2013.

Hours earlier, the SHC had given a crucial verdict in which it declared the SLGA illegal and termed as null and void.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah called legal experts and copy of the SHC verdict to discuss current situation.

The sources said that this active move by the PPP government against the verdict proved that it has a clear intention to hold elections under only this bill.

The Division Bench of the SHC announced its verdict on 10 petitions filed by various political parties, including MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami.

The court ruled that Sindh Local Government (third amendment) Ordinance has been passed by the Sindh Assembly unlawfully and all amendments in the ordinance are illegal.

In its decision, the court directed Sindh government’s concerned authorities to approach the court before future amendments in the local government law.
