Talks with militants first option: NSC

ISLAMABAD: The National Security Committee has decided that talks with militants would remain as the first option, while all other options would be used as last resort.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting during which the draft of the national security policy was discussed.

The draft presented by the Interior Secretary includes strategy to tackle terrorism, talks with militants and measures for law and order in the country. The Interior Secretary also briefed the meeting over the targeted operation in Karachi.

Cabinet Committee on Security decided to hold talks with the Taliban as the first option to eliminate terrorism from the country.

The meeting decided that other options will be used as a last resort to wipe out terrorism.

Secretary Interior and Director General ISI briefed the meeting about internal security situation and successes in the ongoing operation in Karachi to bring peace in the city and participants expressed satisfaction over the results.

DG Military Operations provided a briefing over the situation on the borders, while DG ISI provided details of information sharing. It was decided during the meeting that security would be increased along the western border to prevent illegal movement.

Afghan situation also came under discussion during the meeting and stress was made on improving the situation. Intelligence sharing would be improved between civil and army institutions. A special mechanism would be adopted in this regard.

It was also decided that Pakistan would continue its cooperation to promote national reconciliation in Afghanistan.

The Interior Secretary also briefed the participants about the salient features of the proposed National Security Policy which will be later on presented to the Federal Cabinet for its approval. Prime Minister said that special measures be taken for improving security situation.

Earlier‚ Chief of Army of Staff General Raheel Sharif called on the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed the issues relating to the national security.

The meeting was attended by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and the heads of the three armed forces, federal ministers for defence, finance and information. Advisor to prime minister on foreign affairs and national security, Sartaj Aziz and high officials of the ministries of interior and foreign affairs were also present.
