LAHORE: Supreme Court (SC) Lahore Registry has remarked what will be more tragic than this that an ailing person takes medicine for recovery of health and dies due to this medicine.

A 3-member bench of SC presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tasadduq Hussain Jillani took up suo moto notice case on PIC medicines reaction case for hearing Tuesday.

The SC has remarked that if the pharmaceutical company does not pay amount of compensation to the family members of victims of sub standard medicine equal to what Punjab government has paid then court will give its decision.

The SC further remarked that “ heart patients went up to hospital to seek life but they lost their lives due to spurious medicine .

Counsel for pharmaceutical company told the court compensation to the tune of Rs 300000 per each is being disbursed among the family members of those who had expired after taking the medicines in heart hospital. He further said that owners of pharmaceutical companies don’t have the resources to pay compensation more than this.

CJP remarked “ it has been proved that something wrong was practiced during the manufacturing of the medicine and the patients lost their lives consequently. How can only Rs 300000 be given to them.

Justice Saqib Nisar remarked “ victims of spurious medicines were heads of their respective families. Has some one thought about the family members of victims that they are leading life in what circumstances. It is not an ordinary incident which should be forgotten. What will be bigger tragedy than this that ailing person takes medicine for healing and dies due to this medicine?

The court inquired if the price of one human life has been fixed Rs 300000 only. The court will give its decision if amount of compensation is not paid to the family members of victims as much as Punjab government has paid to the affectees.

The court while giving one more chance to the owners of Afroze Pharmaceutical for enhancement of amount of compensation adjourned the hearing of suo moto notice case till December, 26.
