Will government hold LB polls in next century: SC

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has expressed displeasure over non conducing of Local Bodies (LB) polls in Cantonment Board remarking “ LB polls are constitutional requirement and how can the government back track from it.

SC further remarked “ five months have been elapsed but the polls still seem to be nowhere far and wide . Will these be held in next century? If parliament does not approve constitutional amendment till two years then will you not conduct elections? Government is giving wrong statements repeatedly. This way the polls will stand postponed for a longer period.

SC observed “ no matter government thinks what, it will have to hold elections to meet legal and constitutional requirement. No ill-efficiency or delay will be tolerated on this count.

A 3-member bench of SC presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tasadduq Hussain Jillani took up the case for hearing Thursday.

Additional Attorney General (AAG) Shah Khawar told the court government has completed its homework in the backdrop of holding elections in cantonment boards. Amendment bill is before the parliament. Ordinance -2002 and 1924 act are not in conformity with each other. Government is fully sincere in conducting elections. As soon the bill is passed by the parliament, president will sign it and we will hold the elections.

Justice Khilji Arif remarked “ give us the date of next century when you will conduct the elections.

Justice Azmat Saeed has observed “ Will the government not hold election in cantonment boards if assembly does not approve amendment bill for two years It is laid down in article 140-A that LB polls be held and this is decision of the constitution. How can you deviate from it.

CJP remarked “ you fist of all gave the date of September, 201 which has passed and now January, 2014 has come. But the matter still stands unresolved. You are making wrong statements.

Justice Azmat Saeed observed “ if the law was controversial in your sight then as to why you kept the court under empty hopes.

Shah Khawar said “ we will hold the polls as soon as the amendment bill is passed in parliament. The court directed him to contact the government and inform when it is holding elections. We cannot wait for it more”.

The court has sought reply from the government besides ordering for fixing the case for hearing alongwith the case of secretary defence Asif Yasin

The matter for holding LB polls in Islamabad was also adjourned till January, 16. The hearing of the case was adjourned till January, 16.
