PM Imran Khan underlines need for int’l community to remain engaged in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has underlined the need for the international community to remain engaged in Afghanistan and Afghan people should not be abandoned at this crucial juncture.

During a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, PM Imran Khan emphasized the urgent need for provision of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and the imperative of averting an economic crisis.

Imran Khan stressed that close coordination and consultations between Pakistan and Russia on the evolving situation in Afghanistan are of crucial importance.

Recalling their earlier telephonic conversation of 25th of the last month, the two leaders exchanged views on the latest developments of Afghanistan, bilateral cooperation and collaboration in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Imran Khan underscored that strengthening trade and investments and energy cooperation are the cornerstones of engagement with Russia.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s resolve for early realization of the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline Project. He underscored the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan for regional security and prosperity.

The Prime Minister reiterated his invitation to President Putin to visit Pakistan. President Putin renewed his invitation to Prime Minister Imran Khan to undertake a visit to Russia.

US asks Pakistan ‘not to accept Taliban until they fulfil promises’

Washington: US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken has said that Pakistan should not accept Taliban government in Afghanistan until they fulfil their promises made to world community.

Blinken was addressing the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

US secretary of states said that time has come to ‘revisit’ our ties with Pakistan. Pakistan has cooperated with the US to counter terrorism, he said.

Blinken said that US is also overseeing what role can Pakistan play towards Afghanistan. Pakistan should use its influence to persuade Taliban to fulfil their promises. “This is one of the things we’re going to be looking at in the days, and weeks ahead – the role that Pakistan has played over the last 20 years but also the role we would want to see it play in the coming years and what it will take for it to do that, ” he said.

He told the committee that Pakistan has a “multiplicity of interests, some that are in conflict with ours.” The US official said that they have made it clear to Pakistan that it does not want Islamabad to recognise the Taliban government until it doesn’t give women their due rights and allows Afghans who want to leave the country, to do so.

Speaking about the US-Taliban relationship, Blinken said it was time to end a war spanning two decades in Afghanistan. “We achieved our objectives in Afghanistan, ” he said, adding that the Biden administration inherited the peace agreement with the Taliban from its predecessor.

“The US was likely to suffer more losses by staying in Afghanistan, ” he admitted. “There was no guarantee of the war ending anytime soon had the US decided to stay in Afghanistan for a longer duration.”

Blinken said the US has activated its diplomatic mission in Afghanistan, adding that Washington will keep helping US and Afghan citizens who are staying back in the country.

APHC hails Pakistan’s dossier on Indian brutalities in IIOJK

Srinagar: All Parties Hurriyat Conference has welcomed the dossier issued by the Government of Pakistan on the massive atrocities committed by Indian troops against unarmed Kashmiris in the territory.

APHC Assistant General Secretary Khawaja Firdous in a statement issued in Srinagar that Pakistan has always exposed war crimes, human rights violations, fake encounters and rape of women being used as a war tool by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir.

The APHC leader said that the dossier has testified Pakistan’s commitment to the Kashmir cause and political right of the Kashmiri people. He also welcomed the appeal by the Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to the United Nations and the international community calling for an increase pressure on India to give the UN Human Rights Council access to the occupied territory for an independent inquiry into human rights violations by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.

Pakistan has not recognized Taliban government so far: Asad Majeed

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Asad Majeed Khan has said Pakistan has not recognized Taliban government so far and we are seeing the new Afghan government is fulfilling the expectations of international community to what extent. .

“Pakistan and US want peace in Afghanistan. Now time has come we should learn lesson from the past”, he said this in an interview with the Washington Diplomat.

He stated “my sympathies are with affectees of 9/11 and their families. Pakistan has paid heavy price in war on terror. Over 80000 people embraced shahadat and Pakistan had to suffer financial loss over 150 billion dollars.

There is a government in place in Afghanistan, he remarked. The international community should talk to it or leave it alone.

He held we want human and women’s rights to be preserved in Afghanistan.

He remarked his country wants that the Afghan territory is not used against any country including Pakistan.

The Ambassador said both Pakistan and the US want to see the end of conflict in Afghanistan. He added we would like to see that the gains Afghanistan made over the last few decades are preserved.

As regards bilateral relations with the US, Asad Majeed Khan said Pakistan does not want its relationship to be seen through any prism, be it Afghanistan, India or China.

He underlined that Pakistan-US relations should not be seen in the perspective of some third country, may it be Afghanistan, India or China. US-Pakistan relations have a history. US is the largest export point for Pakistan and is the third largest source of remittances.

It has been the stance of Pakistan from the very beginning that Afghan conflict has no military solution, he observed. Pakistan always stressed on the talks based on political reconciliation.

We talked of responsible US pull out from Afghanistan which should harmonize with progress in peace process, he underscored. Therefore, Pakistan supported intra Afghan talks.

The facts reveal that security situation in Afghanistan is under control, he indicated. There is no information of arrival of Afghan refugees on Pakistan-Afghan border.

He reiterated that Indian government is perpetuating atrocities in Occupied Kashmir. Modi government is anti peace government.

Pakistan wants to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue, he said adding there is no other option with two countries of Pakistan and India except peace.

Mass graves found in IIOJK

Srinagar: Several human rights bodies have discovered mass graves in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which has revealed that India is consistently committing gross human rights violations and war crimes in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a report by International People’s tribunal on human rights and justice in Jammu and Kashmir, about 8, 652 unidentified mass graves in 89 villages of 6 districts of IIOJK have been found.

According to another investigative report by IIOJK state Human rights commission, about 3, 640 mass graves were found in Uri, Baramula, Bandipora and Kupwara districts.

Govt to introduce reforms in criminal justice system

Islamabad: Federal cabinet at its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad Tuesday has decided to introduce comprehensive reforms in the criminal justice system.

Minister for Law Farogh Naseem gave a detailed briefing to the meeting about the proposed criminal law reforms.

Briefing the media about the decisions taken in the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Minister for Information Minister Chaudhary Fawad Hussain said these reforms will change the entire system of criminal justice and address matters relating to delay in trials and registration of FIRs.

The Information Minister said that improving the justice system is on the agenda of Prime Minister Imran Khan. He said this matter will now be discussed in the Cabinet Committee on law and then these reforms will be enforced.

The cabinet rejected the proposal to give ten percent adhoc relief in basic salaries to the Chairman Senate, the Deputy Chairman Senate, the Speaker National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker and other parliamentarians.

Chaudhary Fawad Hussain said this decision is in line with the government’s austerity drive.

During the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his resentment over delay in procurement of wheat. He directed the provinces including Punjab to take steps for the release of wheat stocks.

Chaudhary Fawad Hussain was confident that the prices of wheat flour will gradually come down in the wake of issuance of wheat release schedule by Punjab.

The cabinet was informed that 5G will be launched in the country next year and several companies are showing interest in it.

Prime Minister Imran Khan directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to ensure quality telecom services in every nook and corner of the country.

Alluding to the cyber-attack on the website of FBR, the Information Minister said that inquiry has revealed that most of the data remained safe. He said the FBR has now hired a company for protection of data.

He said the Ministry of Information Technology informed the cabinet that one million attacks have so far been carried out on our websites this year, which were foiled by the NTC. He said Pakistan has a comprehensive framework for cyber security which is further being strengthened.

On the proposal of tariff policy board, the cabinet approved reduction in additional customs duty on auto parts from seven to two percent to promote indigenous production of vehicles. He said additional customs duty on heavy commercial vehicles has also been reduced from seven to two percent.

The cabinet approved the proposed Quaid-e-Azam Foundation Act for the establishment of Quaid-e-Azam Foundation.

PTI govt believes in strengthening institutions, not confronting them: Ch Sarwar

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammed Sarwar said that the PTI government believes in strengthening the institutions and not in confrontation with the institutions with the aim to strengthen the country.

Electoral reforms are very important to strengthen the democracy and the Parliament.

Governor Punjab stated this while addressing the media on Tuesday during visit to National Head Quarter of Boys Scouts Association. On this occasion, Chief Commissioner Boys Scouts Association Sarfaraz Qamar, Central Secretary Iftikhar Ahmad, Paymaster Sajjad Masood Chishti, along with Commissioner Administration of Boys Scouts Association Punjab, Mohammed Waseem Bari, and Rana Takasur other people were present.

While addressing the media Governor Punjab Chaudhary Mohammed Sarwar said that putting obstacles in the way of electoral reforms is not service to the democracy, adding that electoral reforms are necessary in order to strengthen the democracy and the Parliament.

Opposition should keep the interest of country and democracy ahead of personal interest and sit with the government for electoral reforms so that electoral reforms can be introduced to ensure fair and transparent elections.

Chaudhry Mohammed Sarwar said that doing politics is a democratic right of opposition, adding that the government has no threat from the opposition. He further stated that people have given the mandate to government for five years and the government will complete its tenure under the leadership of Imran Khan.

He said that the opposition should wait for the next elections instead of hurling threats of protest, and let people decide from the power of their votes that to whom they want to see in the government.

Governor Punjab said that the government saved Pakistan from economic bankruptcy through its economic policies and despite Covid-19, Pakistan is among the top 10 rising economies. He said that the government is working for the welfare of common people and Insaaf Sehat Card is the gift of government for poor citizens.

The government has increased the scope of Health Cards and free health facility will be provided to larger sections of public.

Responding to a question, the Governor said that it is proved from Cantonment Board elections that Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf is the most popular political party of Pakistan in all four provinces. The government is working with sincerity to fulfil promises made to the public, he added.

Bringing new local government system in mutual consultation with PM: Parvez Elahi

Lahore: Political figures hailing from the Middle East called on Speaker Punjab Assembly Ch Parvez Elahi on Tuesday.

They also announced to join Pakistan Muslim League (PML).

Delegation included Rai Sher Ali, Mian Imran Asif, Raja Jahangir Amman, Rai Gul Sher, Mohammad Kamran and Mian Muhammad Nadeem. On this occasion General Secretary Muslim League Punjab Senator Kamil Ali Agha and Central Secretary Information Mehreen Malik Adam were also present.

Welcoming those joining PML into the party fold, Ch Parvez Elahi said that the overseas Pakistanis are playing important role in the development of friendly countries including Pakistan.

President UAE chapter of Muslim League Rai Sher Ali said that as the Chief Minister Punjab your tenure was the best, during your tenure local bodies were autonomous, peoples problems were being solved on priority basis and there was network of development works throughout the province.

Complete curricular courses to be covered now: Education Minister

Islamabad: Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood has said that no relaxation would be given to students onwards as far as curricular courses are concerned, adding that all students will be declared pass in board exams’ results and 33 percent marks will be awarded to them in case they fail in any subject.

According to a press release of inter-provincial educational ministerial meeting, all education ministers of country were of the opinion that since students had faced difficulties during preparing for their exams, and that abrupt supplementary exam is not possible in current scenario, students should be given concession.

The meeting decided that all educational boards of country will give away 50 percent grace marks in practical examinations and fifty percent marks will be given on the basis of theoretical exams.

Board of technical education will also use same method to promote students, the meeting decided.

According to the press release, matric examinations will be held in May, June next year while new educational year will begin from August.

Federal Minister Shafqat Mehmood while addressing the meeting said that A-levels and O-levels examinations will take place on time, while universities will announce a proper schedule for their examinations.

Educational Institutes to reopen from 16th in Punjab

Lahore: Educational Institutions in Lahore and all over Punjab will reopen from Thursday, 16th September.

Curricular activities would commence in all governmental and private institutions including schools, colleges and universities whereas 50% attendance formula would be implemented. The decision was taken by National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) keeping in view the current COVID situation in all districts of Punjab.
