According to a Gallup and Gilani Pakistan survey, an overwhelming majority of Pakistanis (63%) prioritize dam construction as top flood prevention measures, while 14% prefer enhanced drainage to counter flood risks.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women across the country was asked the question, 'Which measures should the government focus on in the future to prevent floods?'.

In response, a decisive majority of Pakistanis (63%) believed that 'building dams' should be the government's primary focus to prevent future floods. This preference for large-scale infrastructure far surpasses the support for other solutions. 'Improving drainage systems' is the second most cited measure, recommended by 14% of respondents.

Other approaches-such as 'researching climate change' (4%), 'training emergency response teams' (2%), and running 'public awareness campaigns' (2%)-were mentioned by far fewer Pakistanis. An additional 2% gave other responses. Additionally, 13% of those surveyed either did not know or chose not to respond.

These findings highlight a strong consensus on the need for major infrastructure development, especially dam construction, as the preferred solution to recurring flood threats.
