Islamabad: Supreme Court (SC) while taking a stern stance on unnecessary adjournments pleas by the lawyers has issued an important decision.

A written order issued by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has said not only fine can be imposed on the adjournment plea without clear and solid reason but also stern disciplinary action will be taken.

The court made it clear that practice of unnecessary adjournment is violation of professional discipline. This wastes precious time of judicial system.

The SC rejected adjournment plea of one petitioner Abbass Ali Shah.

According to order adjournment can be given only on the plea of advocate on record and on the basis of solid reasons as per SC rules 2025. Heavy fine can also be imposed in the event of violation.

The court said in its remarks 653 adjournment pleas were filed from January to March 2026. Most of them were filed when cases were ready for hearing. This placed burden on judicial resources and national kitty. .

SC maintained unnecessary adjournment runs contrary to right to just trial under article 10-A of the constitution. This right can be given under extra ordinary circumstances on the discretion of the court.
