Islamabad: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed grave concern over introducing proposed constitutional amendment in secret way by the government saying the proposed amendments are not only against the basic structure of constitution but also they are aimed at gagging the independence of the judiciary. In a joint statement, six members of PBC including Mehmood Chohan, Abid Shahid Zubairi, Ishtiaq A Khan, Shahab Sirki, Tahir Sarfraz Abbasi and Munir Ahmad Kakar have said we express grave concern over introducing proposed constitutional amendments secretly in complete defiance of procedure of parliament. The proposed constitutional amendments as is being said are not only violation of basic structure of constitution but also they are aimed at stifling the independence of judiciary. These amendments are against the rule of law. The amendments are being made without any debate to completely abrogate the constitution. This all exercise seems to be rubber stamping exercise so that an alternative judic ial system could be raised for wrong purposes Consensus on amendment in constitution is possible only through speeches and talks. The judges of superior judiciary, lawyers and legal fraternity should get united on this occasion.
