Islamabad: A 13-member delegation of the 45th Mid-Career Management Course visited the Parliament House on Wednesday as part of an official study tour aimed at enhancing understanding of Pakistan's parliamentary system. Senior officers of the Senate Secretariat warmly received the delegation.

Secretary Senate Syed Hasnain Haider briefed the participants on the constitutional role, functions, powers, and procedures of the Senate of Pakistan. He highlighted the Senate's position as custodian of rights and guarantor of equal representation of all federating units, emphasizing its role in promoting national harmony and safeguarding the rights and interests of smaller provinces.

While outlining the historical evolution of the Upper House, the Secretary Senate informed the delegation that the first session of the Senate was held on August 6, 1973, with 45 members, following its establishment to ensure equal provincial representation. He also apprised the participants of the functioning of Senate Standing Committees, parliamentary oversight mechanisms, and the Senate's expanding role in parliamentary diplomacy, including hosting international conferences and undertaking bilateral engagements.

Syed Hasnain Haider further explained that the Senate performs key democratic functions including legislation, oversight, accountability, and public representation, and plays a significant role in policy formulation and strengthening democratic governance.

The briefing was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, during which the delegation showed keen interest and actively engaged with the Secretary Senate, who responded in detail to the queries raised.

Later, the delegation visited the Senate Museum, where they were briefed on Pakistan's parliamentary system, the legislative process, and the constitutional role of the Senate. A documentary on the history of the Upper House was screened, and participants took particular interest in the statues of eminent national figures and historical photographs.

The visit also included a tour of the Senate Hall, where parliamentary traditions, procedures, and stages of legislative business were explained, followed by a walk through Gali-e-Dastoor, offering further insights into Pakistan's parliamentary heritage.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation appreciated the role of the Senate Secretariat in promoting democratic values, institutional transparency, and strengthening the parliamentary system, terming the visit informative and enriching.
