Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has paid glowing tributes to veteran Kashmiri liberation leader and former APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on his martyrdom, recalling his lifelong struggle, steadfastness and commitment to the Kashmir cause.

In a statement issued on Saturday, DFP spokesman Advocate Arshad Iqbal said that Geelani would be remembered in the annals of Kashmir's history for his indomitable role in upholding the right to self-determination.

'Geelani was a fearless leader who took an uncompromising stance on Kashmir and became the voice of the voiceless,' the spokesman said, adding that he never deviated from his cherished ideals.

The spokesman strongly condemned the inhuman manner in which the veteran leader was laid to rest. Following his demise, the Indian occupation authorities supervised his burial in secrecy during the dead of night and prevented people, including his family and admirers, from participating in his funeral prayers. 'This brazen act was not only a violation of human rights but also an affront to religious and cultural values,' he added.

Reaffirming commitment to Geelani's mission, he said the Kashmiri people would continue their struggle until the goal of freedom from India's 'illegal occupation' is achieved.

Meanwhile, the DFP spokesman expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health of the party's incarcerated chairman, Shabir Ahmed Shah, and other Kashmiri prisoners languishing in Indian jails. He urged international human rights organizations to take effective notice of the matter and mount pressure on the Indian government to ensure the immediate release of the senior leader and others suffering from serious ailments.
