Washington: Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Member Supreme Council Mohammad Haleem Khan has written a letter to United States President Donald J Trump seeking his serious attention for resolution of Kashmir dispute.
It has been written in the letter 'On behalf of the people of Jammu Kashmir, I would like to express my deepest gratitude on brokering ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 9, 2025. Your timely intervention has prevented the two nuclear powers to escalate the war, and thus averted imminent catastrophe to take place. Mr. President you have done a commendable job by saving millions of lives in the region'.
The letter says 'Mr. President, you are well aware that the Kashmir is a longstanding issue that emerged soon after the subcontinent (British India) got divided in 1947. The region has been a bone of contention with both India and Pakistan claim their sovereignty over the territory while as the people of the State, the main stakeholder and the principal party to the dispute, remains unheard and unrepresented. Therefore, their active involvement in any kind of dialogue process is a must'.
The letter states 'Mr. President, we believe that an urgent peaceful resolution to this issue is crucial in preventing future conflicts and ensuring the well-being of the Kashmiri people. The Kashmir conflict is complex, with a history of peaceful resistance, armed struggle, human rights abuses and heavy militarization. Despite various UN resolutions, including that of August 13, 1948, calling for a referendum to determine the region's future, a lasting solution remains elusive. We humbly request that you consider deploying a UN peacekeeping force in the region and facilitating a free and fair referendum to allow the people of Kashmir to decide their own fate'.
The letter states 'Mr. President, we appreciate your proactive approach to global issues, including the Middle East and Ukraine, and believe that your leadership can bring about an honorable resolution to the Kashmir conflict because due to the non-resolution of the issue, the people of Kashmir have suffered too much during the last over seven decades. We hope your administration will prioritize finding a solution to this decades-long dispute'.
It has been proposed in the letter that;
- Ceasefire on CFL (ceasefire line), named as LOC by India and Pakistan, that divides the disputed State of Jammu Kashmir.
- ?End human rights violations in Jammu Kashmir
- ?Release Yasin Malik and other pro-freedom political prisoners from jails.
- ?Allow right to assembly and right to speech.
- ?Accept Kashmiri's as a principal party to the dispute to let they represent their people's aspirations.
- ?Finally; to let the United Nations take temporary control of Jammu Kashmir for at least 10 - 15 years, ensuring a peaceful environment for the people of Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination through a referendum.
'I thank you once again Mr. President for your attention to this critical matter. We look forward to your consideration and further communications with your administration shall be highly appreciated' the letter concluded.
