Islamabad: Additional Attorney General of Pakistan has sought more time from Islamabad High Court (IHC) so that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) consults with the Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan whether the government of Pakistan should sign the amicus brief to be filed with the American courts regarding the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.

As per details, the single bench of the IHC comprising Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan on Wednesday heard the constitutional petition of Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui regarding the release of her sister Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.

Her lawyer, Imran Shafique Advocate, after the hearing told media outside the IHC premises that Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan had inquired from the government about its position on the proposed amicus brief to be filed in the American courts on the issue of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. He said at Wednesday's hearing the additional attorney general maintained before the court that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has sought comments from the attorney general of Pakistan whether the government should file the amicus brief in the US court on the issue of Dr Aafia. He sought a time of ten days. However, the court granted him time of seven days and now the hearing in this case would be held on June 25.

He said that interestingly previously the attorney general of Pakistan himself had assured the court that the government would support the amicus brief but later the government took a U-turn and filed an application with the court to dispose of the petition as it's purpose had already been served.

He said that during the previous hearing the court told the government lawyer that the matter of the proposed amicus brief to be filed in the US court is the same that had already been adopted in the letter of the Prime Minister to the US president regarding the release of Dr. Aafia.

He said that it seems that the government now is not serious on this issue and is only trying to buy time. The case is now adjourned to June 25, 2025.
