EC expresses disappointment over 4 years delay in LB polls in Punjab, summons local govt secretary

Islamabad: Election Commission (EC) while expressing resentment over 4 years delay in holding Local Bodies (LB) polls in Punjab has summoned secretary local government Punjab on October 8.

An important meeting of EC was held under Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on the matter of holding LB polls in Punjab.

Meeting was attended by members EC, secretary EC and other senior officers.

Secretary EC briefed EC that local government term had ended in 2021 in Punjab. Amendments were made in local government rules five times in previous tenures. Now work is underway on legislation for sixth time.

The case was heard on June 2, 2025 in EC to ensure LB polls in the province. EC had given three months time to Punjab government to hold LB polls on the plea of provincial government. But no progress has been received from Punjab government about legislation.

The EC expressed disappointment over this state of affairs and fixed October 8, 2025 to hear the case related to LB polls in Punjab. Secretary local government Punjab has been summoned in person

Full bench of EC will hear the case.
