Islamabad: The Federal Shariat Court has clarified its powers following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, ruling that the Supreme Court's authority to interpret the Constitution and laws has now been transferred to the Federal Shariat Court.

Justice Amir Farooq highlighted that prior to the 27th Amendment, the Supreme Court of Pakistan held the exclusive power to interpret the Constitution and laws.

Under the new constitutional framework, this interpretive authority now rests with the Federal Shariat Court.

The court emphasized that it can review the constitutional validity of legislation and has the power to request records from any case concerning interpretation.

The ruling was issued in a tax-related case, where Justice Amir Farooq clarified that following the 27th Amendment, the Supreme Court no longer has authority to review or interpret laws under the previous scheme. The judgment marks a significant shift in Pakistan's judicial hierarchy, redistributing constitutional interpretive powers from the Supreme Court to the Federal Shariat Court.
