Islamabad: Former chief of naval staff of Admiral retired Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey passed away in Islamabad.

Pakistan Navy spokesperson said Sirohey was commission in the navy in 1955, adding that he also participated in wars fought against India in 1965 and 1971.

He served as the Pakistan Navy chief from 1986 to 1988 and chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1988 to 1991.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf expressed condolence over the death of Sirohey. He also paid tribute to him for his services.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the sad demise of former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and ex-Naval Chief Admiral retired Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey.

In their separate statements, they prayed for the higher ranks of the departed soul in the hereafter and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

They also paid rich tribute to the late Iftikhar Sirohey for his services to the defense of country.
