Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan has launched a major crackdown against fake news and disinformation networks following the recent Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) incident, credible sources revealed on Monday.

According to sources, several fake news networks have been exposed and a list of key individuals involved has been prepared. Legal action will be initiated under the National Cyber Crimes and Counter Intelligence Act (NCCIA), while the FIA Cyber Crime Wing and other special units are expected to make arrests soon.

The Deep Fake Lab has been activated to conduct forensic examinations of fabricated videos and audio clips, the sources added. Social media platforms have also been served notices and instructed to remove false or misleading content within 24 hours.

Authorities are reportedly considering permanent suspension of accounts repeatedly violating social media policies. Officials have warned the public to remain cautious, as sharing unverified videos or clips could result in legal action.

A 'zero-tolerance policy' has been enforced against hate-based disinformation targeting state institutions. Investigations have also begun into overseas propaganda networks believed to be operating from India and Afghanistan.

Diplomatic and legal measures, including the issuance of Red Notices through Interpol, are under consideration. Provincial focal persons and rapid-response counter-messaging units have been activated nationwide.

The government has also urged media outlets, YouTubers, and bloggers to ensure dual verification of any content before publication. A dedicated helpline (1919) has been made operational for the public to report fake news, with the assurance that whistleblower identities will remain confidential.
